Tax time is here! If you have a large number of medical expenses, you might be able to deduct many of these from your taxes.
Like what? Many types of medical expenses are deductible, from long-term care to hospital stays to hearing aids. To claim the deduction, your medical expenses have to be more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. In addition, you can only deduct medical expenses you paid during the year, regardless of when the services were provided, and medical expenses are not deductible if they are reimbursable by insurance.


 

You can deduct medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents. The following are some of the items included in the definition of medical expenses . . .


 

On March 7, 2007, Minnesota's attorney general became the third attorney general to file suit against two California companies run by the same family that allegedly sold inappropriate living trusts and annuities to seniors. Last year, state attorneys general in Pennsylvania and North Carolina filed suit against the same companies. In October 2006, the North Carolina attorney general won an order preventing the companies from selling products in the state while the lawsuit against it is pending.


 

The knowledge that we will eventually die is one of the things that seems to distinguish humans from other living beings. At the same time, no one likes to dwell on the prospect of his or her own death!


 

But if you postpone planning for your demise until it is too late, you run the risk that your intended beneficiaries -- those you love the most -- might not receive what you would want them to receive, whether because of extra administration costs, unnecessary taxes or squabbling among your heirs.


 

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America has released results of a survey that shows African-American and Hispanic caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s Disease are significantly more likely than caregivers of other races to consider the disease a normal part of the aging process, and therefore dismiss its symptoms. This gap in understanding might help explain a delay in diagnosis and treatment in certain populations.
Legislators in California are considering two pieces of legislation that, if enacted, might affect Alzheimer's patients, their families and their caregivers.
